LANGEVIN
DUAL VOCAL COMBO
|
|
The
Langevin Dual Vocal Combo is a 2 channel microphone preamplifier with
2 shelf equalizers plus 2 channels of electro-optical limiters. The combo
is the result of suggestions from our dealers to combine two of the most
popular all discrete Langevin products. This includes VU meters, phantom
power, limiter linking and time proven circuitry. This should be an ideal
box for musicians and engineers on a budget and be equally at home in
a studio, mobile recording truck or live gig. It has the reliability,
functionality, and the sound without the complexity. The essential features
without the ³sea of knobs². The Mic Pre¹s are transformer coupled (hand
wound by Manley) with 50 dB of gain provided by pure discrete transistor
circuits. 48 volt phantom power can be applied to each input XLR independently
and the switches are a locking type to prevent accidents. New to the Langevin
line are front panel 1/4" Direct Instrument inputs. A new little discrete
circuit from Paul Fargo gives these inputs an appropriate input impedance
(500K) and provide about 40 dB of gain. The Equalizers are comprised of
a low frequency shelf that can be switched to either 40 Hz or 80 Hz and
a high shelf that can be set for 8 kHz or 12 kHz. These shelves are continuously
variable from -10 dB to +10 dB of gain. Of course, the EQ can be completely
switched out if needed. The Mic Pres and Equalizers are refined versions
of the original Langevin AM-4 channel strip which is another one of those
prized vintage pieces. The Limiter is the discrete transistor version
of the Manley Electro-Optical Limiter (also featured in the VoxBox). This
type of limiter is superb for vocals and a wide range of instruments from
basses and guitars to synths and room mics. When it comes to tracking
and fast set-ups, the lack of a multitude of controls is a real feature.
You can simply set up the Threshold and Gain controls and expect that
the limiter will do the right thing without a lot of tweaking. The Limiters
have Threshold and (make-up) Gain controls, a Link switch for stereo and
a pair of toggles that switch the VU meters to ³Gain Reduction² or ³Output
Level². These are true stereo limiters without the usual problems of left/right
matching common to other stereo opto based limiters. The back panel has
XLR mic inputs paralleled with 1/4" TRS jacks that feed the mic pre stage.
There is also a 1/4" line level input for the limiters so they can be
inserted into console channels for a mix. The main outputs are transformerless
balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/4" TS. The chassis is a 2U box (3.5" high)
with a 1/4" red anodized panel. Because this unit is discrete, easy on
the wallet and meant to be ultimately easy and quick to use, there are
certain little things that it may not do for you. There are no ³line inputs²
for the mic preamps but if you turn the ³Input Attenuators² down, it may
be OK. There are no ³Direct Outputs² from the Mic Pre/EQ stage so one
can¹t use those and the Limiters as 4 separate sections. The limiters
while amazing for vocals and individual instruments are not optimal for
mixes or individual drums. The EQ is sweet and simple but obviously not
a 4 band parametric. However, if you just want to plug in a few mics and
get a killer sound, you probably don¹t want or need every possible button,
knob, jack and patch point - just the essentials, as long as it performs
the job every day and delivers real quality sound. Usually in audio ³less
is more² but it is unusual to get ³more for less ($)². The Dual Vocal
Combo is for those of us who enjoy making music and good sound more than
patching, tweaking and twiddling. |
